Course's Detail
Forest genetic resources (FGR) in Indonesia are threatened due to deforestation and forest degradation. Due to their importance, FGR should be firstly characterized in order to support local and global agenda priorities such as forest landscape restoration or species conservation. Although research to characterize FGR have been conducted for several tree species, there are still lacks of reliable population genetic information considering a wide range of species distribution and also species endemism. The lecture will present research efforts to determine population genetic diversity based mainly on genetic markers of selected tree species (e.g. Shorea spp and Diospyros spp). The genetic data and information could be used as important consideration when selecting the suitable seed sources for planting stock procurement. In addition, the information is also very essential to formulate the sound strategy of genetic conservation and sustainable utilization.
Key words: genetic diversity, seed sources, restoration, deforestation, species conservation
